Kristoffer's thoughts about sexuality.
(2001-01-16 - Updated 2002-02-25)
First of - I'm straight and I'm very comfortable with my sexuality. This is
not an outburst of insecurity or anything.
I don't have many homo- or bisexual friends. As far as I know, I only have one
friend and three mail-buddies who are homosexual. So excuse my poor insight
into the gay community!
I'm one of those people who don't think homosexuality is "natural"
in a scientific sense. But I am one of those people who respect other people's
choices and support them, as long as it makes them happy and doesn't hurt anyone.
Why don't I think it's biologically natural to be homosexual? Remember, this
is me thinking out loud - any species have a natural instinct to procreate,
usually by mating with the opposite sex. And the basic thought of procreation,
which many people would say is a reason for being, is not compatible with homosexuality.
And it's almost unavoidable to get into the actual physical problems of man-man
& woman-woman. I don't, however, agree the argument that "this is the
way I was brought up", since that is a purely mental thing that can be
changed.
But one of the things that (I like to think) separates us from other animals
is that we have the gift of concsiously overriding our natural instincts. Take
things like "hunger strikes" and "Kamikaze" that defies
the instict for self preservation. And the "physical problems"...
well, we weren't made to be able to fly, be underwater for a long time or go
to the moon. But we've done all that. Me, personally, think the most un-sexy
image I can think of is two guys... such a huge turn off. (Fortunately it's
never happened "in the field", knock on wood!)
The weird... hell, totally contradictory thing is that two women together is
a turn on! And don't think I'm weird for thinking that, I know most guys agree
with me there. (why else is there a obligatory lesbian-scene in every porno
made today? And why does everyone laugh at Joey's "Oh my :)" jokes
in "Friends"!)
I don't know why we guys like the idea so much, but let me assure you girls
- most of us do. (what you do with that info is completely up to you!)
But why? It's completely illogical to like watching two chicks doing each other?
Is there some weird idea/hope that we might get to play as well or what?
To all girls reading this and are thinking less of their guys because of what
I just said, consider this - We may like watching two unknown girls do each
other, but we HATE to see someone, ANYONE, be intimite with our girlfriend/wife/whatever.
So it might be a fantasy in our heads, but that's all it is.
(I'm speaking of guys in general here!)
And the entire issue of gay's being inappropriate for adoption is just nonsense,
if anything, they'd probably make better parents than some straight couples!
From my small experience with gay people, I think they are more open-minded,
self assured, secure and most of all respectful. (but there are exceptions,
of course!)
And I can't see any gay person bringing up a child with the strict idea that
the child must be gay because that is the right way to go. And it wouldn't work,
because gay people have themselves proven that it's possible to totally defy
any idea you're brought up with. So I totally support same sex marriages and
adoption.
But I still don't think it's natural...
Bisexuality is however something I can completely understand. I think the movie
"Chasing Amy" explained it best - in the search for that right one,
why exclude half of the worlds population?
