Tuvok och Neelix är nere på en planet för att undersöka floran. Neelix tar tillfälligt i akt och försöker pigga upp Tuvok, förgäves.
På Voyager har dom lite problem att beama upp dom pga någon molekylär makapär i transportern. När dom sen beamar upp dom två återmaterialiseras en person som verkar vara en blandning av både Tuvok och Neelix. Han tar sig till sickbay där han undersöks rejält, och Doc kommer fram till samma sak - dom har fuserats till en enda person. Han hittar även spår av blommor. Orkidérna dom hade samlat har visst oxå blandats ihop.
Kes och Tuvix går till labbet för att göra fler tester. Det blir såklart lite underligt eftersom han är Neelix men ändå inte, men hon kör på. Så tar han ett namn oxå, Tuvix.
Efter ett dygn av tester och mer tester känner han sig lite rastlös, och vill återgå till Tactical, men Janeway tvekar, men börjar lite lätt med honom med en staff briefing.
Dom hittar inga tecken på någonting fel alls, fast Tuvix tänder en glödlampa - just det att det var växter dom hade med sig kan allt bero på "symbiogenesis", en organism (tex. en amöba) binder ihop sig med en annan organism och skapar en tredje hybrid. Och eftersom både Neelix och Tuvok hade upplösts på molekylär nivå kunde enzymerna från blommorna mixat ihop en coctail. Så nu skall det undersökas, men dom tar en liten break för kvällen.
Tuvix vill bjuda Kes på middag, tyvärr är det total kaos i köket.
När dom städar upp pratar dom lite, och Kes inser hur konstig situationen blivit.
Nästa dag testar dom att beama testexemplar, två blommor från Voyager, ihop med en orkidé, och dom mixas mycket riktigt ihop.
Men dom vågar inte testa att omvända processen, eftersom det hittils dödat alla 100 testexemplar. Tyvärr är inte Doc så optimistisk att hitta något sätt alls att återställa Neelix och Tuvok. Kes vet inte riktigt vad hon skall tro, så hon tar till meditation.
Och Tuvix älskar henne och hoppas hon skall känna som för Neelix, men det går inte. Så hon besöker Janeway i hopp om råd. Hon har såklart oxå svårt att smälta allt som hänt, Tuvok var ju trots allt en gammal bästis till henne. Och hon började verkligen gilla Neelix, och så händer detta.
Enda hon har att säga är att Kes nu befinner sig i samma sits som dom flesta på Voyager när dom svuschades bort - att antingen acceptera förändringen eller hålla kvar hoppet att allt blir bra.
Två veckor senare har Tuvix lärt sig att passa in, och alla har mer eller mindre accepterat honom fast Kes har fortfarande lite probs.
Då tänder Doc en glödlampa - om dom lyckas göra Neelix eller Tuvoks molekyler radioaktiva kan det räcka för att transportern skall kunna separera dom.
När dom lyckas med testerna presenterar Doc och Kim sin teori, men då kommer Tuvix med ett dilemma - denna procedur skulle ju faktiskt döda Tuvix. Och Janeway, som är så starkt emot att ens försöka rättfärdiga mord, har svårt att komma på ett sätt att göra det ändå.
Hon motiverar det med att det inte bara är Tuvix liv som står på spel, utan både Tuvok och Neelix oxå, fast Tuvix tycker fortfarande det är avrättning, men Janeway tycker den enda som avrättat folk är han om han inte gör detta.
Efter lite sparring med Janeway går han till Kes och ber henne hjälpa honom, så hon drar till Janeway men hon vet inte riktigt vad hon tycker eller vad som är bäst, enda hon vet är att hon vill ha tebax Neelix.
Janeway tar sig en rejäl funderare och beslutar tillslut att använda sin auktoritet för att tvinga Tuvix att genomgå separationen, och han gör ett sista desperat försök till uppror på bryggan, men förgäves.
Då stöter dom på _nästa_ problem - Doc, som tack vare Hipokrates ed inte kan göra något ont mot sin patient, dvs Tuvix.
Kallt och bestämt föser hon Doc åt sidan och gör det själv, ser till att det går bra och går ut i korridoren där hennes känslor för vad hon precis gjort kommer ikapp henne.

Kommentar av manusförfattaren Ken Biller:
"It was a tricky episode, because it could devolve into something farcical. [..] It is another one of those semi-hokey sci-fi premises, sort of the opposite of what I got in 'Faces'.
The guys who wrote the story, Andrew Price and Mark Aberman, are really smart and have a lot of fun, high-concept ideas. Their story leaned a bit too heavily on the slapstick elements, however, and I ended up taking it over and completely rewriting it.
We wanted to do something a little more serious and philosophical and it began to emerge as we talked about it that there was something interesting there once you got past the hokiness of the set up.
It started out as a joke. What do you call this guy? Neelok? Tuvix? It almost felt like a '60s sit-com. Brannon and I even came up with a little theme song. So the trick was to see if we could actually make something compelling out of it. What if the sum of the parts were greater than the whole? He's great at everything.
He's better than Tuvok because he's able to temper Tuvok's logic with a little bit of Neelix' heart and instinct, and he tempers some of Neelix excessiveness and eccentricities. His cooking is actually a little better than Neelix' and he is actually a little easier to deal with on the bridge. What happened if you find a way to bring the other guys back?"

"For a while that was the idea, but then we began to talk about it and consider what if he really wanted to survive and he doesn't want to die and be killed.
Michael [Piller] posed that question to me so I give Michael a lot of credit. I hoped to create tension at the end where it would be difficult for anyone watching to know what the right thing to do was.
Janeway has to make a decision and it's a tough one, and she has to live with it."

"I wanted to keep asking the question, just keep poking at the audience. There isn't an answer.
Different people had different points of view about it. Doc has taken an oath to do no harm, and he's presented with a living creature in from of him and is asked to kill it. I got a lot of mail about it. People were really moved.
It provoked a lot of discussion about what Janeway had to do and it was an opportunity to show her making the really tough devisions which captains are faced with."

Hipokrates ed:

Kontinuitet:
Hogan lever fortfarande och sätter nya rekord i "näst längs levande tekniker" tävlingen (fast nya karaktären Swinn dyker upp i nästa veckas avsnitt), och Kim över fortfarande med sin klarinett.
En annan liten story som nästan helt åsidosatts på senaste tiden är romansen mellan Neelix och Kes som här hamnar i centrum.
En till sak som är svår att missa här är Janeways inställning till att avrätta någon, som hon i "Meld" fann totalt oacceptablet, och även om hon svek den filosofin såg man ju verkligen att hon inte njöt av det. Likaså håller Doc på med sin ed som han nämnt tidigare i tex. "Heroes and Demons" och citerar (i en kortare variant) i "Darkling".
En av de älsta raserna i ST nämns lite snabbt, "Andorians", som hängt med sen TOS:"Journey to Babel".
Teknotermen "cytoplasmic", som här nämns som en grej i växter, var med tidigare i VOY:"Phage" då en "cytoplasmic stimulator" användes för att underlätta Neelixs andning efter han tappat bort lungorna.
Stationen "Jupiter Station" som Tuvok visst tjänstgjort på är bygget där Lewis Zimmermann jobbar med sina holografiska doktorer.
